Tuesday Twitter Question Time this week was a first me, During the week I recieved a direst message through Twitter asking if it would be possible to help this person out by asking a question which would help them with their finals which are happening at the end of the week. I was, even though my Twitter personality may not have you believe it, delighted to be able to help this person out and I am thrilled so many of you took part hopefully this will help @gavreilly out in his finals and best of luck to him!
I am hoping I interpreted his question correctly “Since I have been so quiet it proves to me that Twitter has nothing to do with my job! But is Twitter beneficial to yours? Also does your employer approve you using it?”
joescanlon - it’s certainly beneficial on getting to connect with lots of new (and some old) people - it can become very addictive. It doesn’t have any major impact on work - sits on the side may comment every so often- I use more so on eves and weekends
PixieVonDust - Twitter is a pretty good edition to my job but the operations manager tells me off if I tweet to much. Twitter is another news source and way of contacting peeps for interviews but I don’t always use it for that purpose. :0
davymac - Being a ‘Lone Ranger’ yes Twitter is beneficial to my job - and yes, the Boss approves
But I’d sack anyone caught using Twitter!!!
Actually on a more serious note there’s been some good web articles on why staff are happier with a fix of ‘web’ in work hours
grannymar - I am the boss and I approve! Most of my years of employment were before pcs we used pens and pencils, when we did have pcs folk thought they were about to explode or bite them. Seriously Twitter is both good and bad. News as it happens and answers to questions and help. Sports blow by blow is a bore!
damienmulley - Twitter has given me new friends, new business contacts and a HUGE amount of insights and breaking news.
lexia - Met loads of interesting people, widened my horizons, questioned my beliefs etc. Some people at work know, yes. And made friends too
loris_sl - I work by myself (self employed I guess) and Twitter brings me fun and relax. It improved my working life
Araldia - Well I am not employed atm, but I am sure that when the band gets off the ground, my twitter faithful will spread the word lol
thedogsdish - Twitter allows me 2 meet like minded peeps worldwide & potential clients both, vast resource center LIVE & I work 4 myself
Dotwebs - self-employed and don’t know yet as I’ve only just started
eolai - I’m self-employed & I approve of my use of Twitter: It has given me contacts, customers, friends, resources, & blurred them all
cloudsteph - Yes benefits my work-very helpful web community on Twitter, making me aware of some excellent Irish talent thats out there too.
jkeyes - Twitter is slightly beneficial to my job, my employer doesn’t approve or disapprove as I currently have no employer!
elfinamsterdam - hmm… it doesn’t really, and I’d say if he knew he wouldn’t be impressed. I wish it did benefit as I’d love to be on more, the only way you could interpret as a benefit is it keeps me sane as I have people to chat to from time to time so that’s good
patphelan - ask @chriskennedy he works for me, not a problem
ChrisKennedy - 2 answer the question, Twitter has benefitted my job on occasion, @patphelan actually got me onto twitter lol
antgalvin - I am the boss (ha!) Vital for work, its an inspiration.
iCork - Yes & Yes. Twitter expands your knowledge base and great way of making contacts.
johnpeavoy - Twitter really enhances my networking ability John. I’ve made quite a few new friends, and met some very interesting people. And I have been able to learn lots of strategic stuff for my job, which positions me well to better sell our products. Finally, yes, the Boss does know but doesn’t really understand
And doesn’t care too much tbh. Results what matters.
ciaran_o_kelly - I can imagine it being used in good ways in higher ed a la @stephenkinsella, though my own employer is wary of the www, sadly.
darraghdoyle - Twitter for me is a conversation continuer. The equivalent of walking down a street and seeing someone you remember you wanted to talk to or ask something. It is my cool things finder, my news source and my entertainment channel for the day.
bailleres - yes it does, as i am interested in people in general…and i am unemployed at the moment–but my job is what i make it.
ptanham - I use RSS feeds of twitter search terms and find it very useful for honest feedback on products & services I manage in work, It gives me the ability to hear what customers say about our products to their friends, which is beyond priceless.
raptureponies -I’ve been trying to make people at work twitter, but no one seems interested/understands it!Boo urns, cause i think it’d be good!
enormous - i blog for work @iia. Boss approves of course
As @nialllarkin said to me last week T is great for networking
sineadcochrane - It’s not blocked in work, so I use it, probably a bit too much, but being alone in the office all day will do that to a girl.
markhamnolan - I am my own boss. I think the fact that I Tweet fucking rocks. I am promoting myself to president-for-life on that basis.
Obviously with a work related question some people direct messaged answers to me and because of this shall remain anonymous
Twitter doesn’t currently benefit my job, though some of the brass are on Twitter -so it’s no secret that I use it at work.
I find it more useful for finding out about new technology. Not allowed use it at work. Has no impact on my job.
So thanks again to everyone for taking part, it was a great question that was put forward and hopefully it will give Gav some food for thought and best of luck on Friday.

Dude, thanks a million, that is seriously useful. I honestly thought that most employers would be a little sceptical about employee distractions but I suppose given the tendency of Irish twitterers to work in the IT sphere anyway it was to be expected that people would be a little more open-minded to it.
Thanks to everyone for replying too, you’ve no idea how much this is going to help me for my exam on Friday. I owe you ALL a pint.*
* - Pint might be shared between all of you. Just sayin’.
Well done John - great q and great to help @GavReilly - looking forward to the next one
Well, my employer is on Twitter too, @photomatt, athough he did mention, “You’re on that a whole lot” when I showed him the Tweet Tweet plugin in Colorado. Haven’t had as much time to tweet these days because of work pressures, but I think it benefits my work as people who use WordPress MU and the Super Cache plugin follow my tweets and I occasionally mention those subjects!
