Ok it’s ttqt and today question come from a chat I had last night reminising about childhood sweets no longer around with @gavinsblog so my question is what sweet brings back fond memories that ain’t around no more!!!
stretchneil Those sour apple drop things that used to make me salivate for hours and scrunch my face up!
karenquinn A fun one it seems! All the sweets I liked are still around I’m not that old, unlike grandad mcawillliams! ok I’ve thought about it and there’s a few. Clove rock which my great aunt used to give me. Silvermints from my granny, rhubarb and custards. Strawberry Toffee bonbons. Huge lumps of fudge. 10p mix ups. Refresher bars, kola kubes, White mice, fish n chip sweets, giant chewy strawberries, sour key shaped chews, golfballs, highland toffee bars. Bubblys.
prendio2 I was chatting about refresher bars just last night.. mmm filled with delicious sherbet… don’t think they’re around any more. That conversation lead naturally to stinger bars but I was never really into them.
emilytully Fizzlesticks. Daffy Ducks - they were liqorice and you just can’t get that anywhere anymore. YUM!!! Space dust, y’know the stuff that crackled in your mouth….I was a fat kid, obviously
Refreshers the chewey ones. Would you believe I’m the biggest heath food freak now! I wasn’t actually allowed sweets as a kid, at all!! This is fantasy!!
darraghdoyle The real black jack penny sweets, the ones with the gollywogs on wrapper that made your tongue black. The sweet made your tongue black, obviously… I know a girl (who shall remain anoymous) who was convinced flying saucers (sweets with sherbet) was actually the host in Mass they used them in school to practise for first holy communion and she assumed the sherbet was jesus dissolving on her tongue, absolutely disgusted to find out that it wasn’t so. I thought it was brilliant. You’d have had record numbers for communion!
grannymar Flash bar cost 2d…very expensive twice as much as a sailors chew.
joescanlon Hmm.. Are the golf balls still around? That’s one that always brings me back to primary school, great question - I’ll be talking about it all night with family… Wham bars, edible paper etc.
Araldia Sherbet Fountains. But I had to share the licorice as its yucky!! Thank goodness for online confectionary stores!
cloudsteph Black jacks, their cousins the apple jacks n pear drops
irishstu Starbars and Doubledips
threnn Dip Dabs, kola kubes and those 5p fizzy cola lollipops.
sophierobbins Long thin strip of hard candy in green sour apple flavor, forgot what it was called…ref sweets talk LOL
icedcoffee Hmm many that are barely available today, the animal bar (nestlé). most sweets from quality st remind me of christmas, I enjoy the bourneville choc in quality st (I think) though had never bought a full bar until today, it was yummy
celineon Oooh a childhood sweets qs, love it @mcawilliams. Sherbet Dip and those cola sweets with sherbet in the middle.
Distantrambler As for sweets cola bottles, ordinary and not the large ones
bigstevie1275 Sweet called chelsea whoppers they where like a liquorce flat brown chew thing always had them at break time can’t get em now.
goodonskis Spangles I’d pay £5 for just one packet now!
IreneFisher Fizzy chewits, especially the blue ones. They would make my face spasm they were so fizzy. Mouth watering just thinking of them.
Great selection of all things sugar for us all to ponder over, of course the sweet my self and Gavin ended up on last night was the Wham bar which was a mental pink chewy yolk with hard fizzy bits in it! I am telling you the amount of toothaches from it!!! others that no one seemed interested in were texan chocolate bar, macaroon, cadburys fuse(the bar made out of left overs) I know there are loads of other ones just aint coming to me now!
How late am I in posting this up, last Thursdays Twitter Question Time was all about the hype around Barack Obama, and now that it has died off a bit, my question was “Can this man change the world, and what can he do for Ireland”
moonstruckmania well it seems anything would be a step up from that!
Mike_Kiely I’d like to, but I think he’s quite conservative at heart.
icedcoffee hmm… well there is already change with him behind the first black president, setting huge precedent for other countries.
emilytully I think he’ll be like the iphone, much anticipated, major hype, but questionable as to whether or not he is the best. I also think he hot. Yes I would. Sorry to lower the tone…
wowzer85 he has a mess to start cleaning up in America before he gets to the rest of the world! He will turn our economy around, and ultimately will have it’s positve effects on the global economy.
darraghdoyle it’s not can obama change the world. He already has. I see him more of a poster boy for ppl who do want to take more of a part in changing their world. He’s “proved” it can be done, no matter what your background. So there’ll be a lot done around that. will he change America? I think so. Strong team and administration with effective use of media could help a lot w/ empowerment i reckon he’ll persuade america it can change, so it will. That will have knock on effects.
jkeyes I would love to say yes he’ll change the world, but I think the task is too massive to achieve very much in 4 years. I hope he can back up his speech making with decision making. I don’t see much change for Ireland, Afghanistan and Iraq are much higher on the agenda. Looking forward to his science and technology slant. If his grasp of the media (old and new skool) is anything to go by he’ll definitely make an impact. I wish him well.
aileenwilliams he want’s to keep more business’ in America and not have them go to country’s that offer them tax incentives, so not looking good for Ireland.
joescanlon I don’t think Obama will do much for Ireland directly. Our politicians could learn a lot from him/his energy/charisma etc
lecraic his election changes the way people think, which in itself is a very powerful force, maybe THE most powerful.
sineadcochrane On topic? http://tinyurl.com/58odgh (expand) ah, makes me laugh far more than it should.
marramgrass Believe it or hope for it? Maybe different answers. I *hope* so.
bigstevie1275 I happy that he got voted in and glad to see the USA get there first black president and hopefully he will make a difference BUT at the end of the day hes a politician and I think that says it all.
PattyHankins He can make a difference. I think it will be because he will work with others to reach consensus rather than starting wars
stretchneil he’s like the living embodiment of a rorschach test. He can never be what people want him to be, but by allowing people to project their hopes onto him, he has already changed things substantially.
gavreilly What I’d like to see most is his campaign’s use of social media being carried over into his actual governance. His command of it to unite and buld momentum was immense, I want his legacy to the world to be open, communicative, transparent Government.
So there you have it, its good to see America’s hopes realised by the rest of the world, I like others am hoping this guy can do as much as possible.
Today on Twitter Alexia tweeted up a link to her blog for a recipe for a Coca Cola cake. Now anyone who knows me, will confirm the words coca cola are an instant attraction, yet the words cooking do not work well with me. So off I toddled over to this post and I had a read of the recipe and thought feck this I am going to give it a try.
I mentioned this to Paula who had rung me to see if I needed anything in the shops, when I told her I wanted to make a cake the phone nearly dropped, did I say what a bad cook I am. Anyhow she picked up a few things we did not have at home and tonight I made the cake.
Obviously being me, I decided to do a few Qiks to show how it was going.
1st off in the oven baking away!!!
2nd one is when I took it out of the oven.
3rd one is removing the tin and the near disaster that thankfully was averted.
And lastly the cutting of the cake!
Seriously you need to try to make this cake its yum, honestly some people would top it with something even Alexia mentioned it on her blog but the cake is very filling as is putting more on it I think would be insane!
So thank you Alexia for sharing this recipe with everyone and thank you for allowing me to attempt my first ever cake, guys you have no idea how proud I feel right now!
Tuesday Twitter Question Time and well www.mcawilliams.com has undergone a big change, and what better way to show off http://verba.mcawilliams.com then with ttqt and my question tonight was if you were a betting sort what odds would you give to us having a white Christmas?
Pointless question but have been doing Christmas adverts all day so please excuse me!
benkenealy Sure the leaves haven’t even fallen yet on most trees. Im holding out for a white late Jan / early Feb!
irishstu 50-50. It will or it won’t.
stretchneil Hundred to one.
NiallHarbison I am a betting sort and I’ll give you 10/1.
icedcoffee We had snow last month… there may be no more. It is getting colder (in general) so there is a chance. about 50/50.
petsaretalking I bet your odds are about 50%. Our odds are about 10%. Rainy, though. A wet christmas.
debbiemet 10/1 against. Pessimist, moi?
aileenwilliams We had snow one xmas morning down here remember.
emilytully 10-1 as we had snow in October, oh and I like Verba, very nice!
PixieVonDust Heh. I’ll never give up on wishing for a white Christmas and I think this year is the one! I’m big into Christmas, I need the real tree, homebaked stuff and I love buying presents for family and friends.
damienmulley I’d say grey but not white
kenmcguire Sligo usually good for a dose of snow at Christmas, have had a few white ones there in recent years with the family
bigstevie1275 I’d say we are in with a chance of it this year. But working in retail has killed my Xmas spirit. So bah humbug.
joescanlon Am I too late for an answer? I’d give you 10/1 - it’s a boring answer - but making money is v serious
jkeyes Not a hope, more chance of Mary Harney’s popularity increasing.
So there you have it, interesting views and to be honest the 50:50 chance is something we would not have imagined this time last year for christmas 2007, so I am optimistic. Thanks everyone for taking part.
Right so had a day off today and decided to download loads of updates to the canon software I have on my computer, one of which was a newer version of remote capture where I can use the computer to control the camera, and I decided to take some snapshots of myself for an avatar for twitter.
I have 4 images to choose from but all merit something so I would love if you guys through comments or on twitter can let me know which you prefer!
So here they are…
Thursdays Twitter Question Time again and today after reading a report about social networking sites and productivity in the workplace, todays question was
“Do you find since u started using Twitter that you miss it if you have to work, do u feel u may miss something important being away, has it affected ur workflow, ie are u an addict?”
doneganlan No - its good for the business in the sense of doneganland has just done this or that and keeps people informed and using twinkle really helps in that dept.
stretchneil A little, definitely, but the flip side is that I interact a huge amount more with other bloggers. Good for what i’d like to do though!
Mike_Kiely No, it’s a relief to be away from it and the torrent of too many opinions. No Twitter means real work is happening.
uberalex I have found that I have spent more time than I would like sometimes, but it’s been good to see who else is into tech in in real life.
PixieVonDust funny you should ask that. I just did a podcast in work on how to tell when you’re a Twitter addict and need a twittervention! I was saying that I feel disconnected if I’m away from it for too long.
Araldia i dont miss it as i take it with me. everywhere. if theres no signal on my phone i make him drive till there is. I’m not addicted. I just have internet separation issues.
jscan1 very much addicted- also trying to get everyone I know to get on it too, and I find myself wondering ‘are these words coming out of MY mouth?’ - business plan: twitter rehab LOL
shadowcallI leave it up all day in it’s own tab in FF, but I rarely turn on mobile alerts when I am away. I’m “not quite addicted”
moonstruckmania Ttqt, yes addicted, I waste too much time reading tweets and wishing I could tweet when not on the computer.
emilytully yes like a feckin maze! But as I’m addicted to Twitter I found time to let you all know I was lost.
bigstevie1275 I think I can safely say yes I’m a tweeter addict even if I don’t post I’m always reading it, going back along people I’m following just to see what’s been said even if of is only u @mcawilliams saying “having a smoke then lunch” LOL
jkeyes Not an addict, it’s like having a television program on in the background, not 100% concentrated but getting the important bits I do refer to people by their usernames now though, and my wife thinks I’m nuts. Does that mean I am step 1 to becoming an addict?
marramgrass No shame here: total addict. I get the shakes when I go without and scrawl 140 character grafitti everywhere I go…
enormous I already admitted my addiction the first twitter anon session @podcampireland. 12 step prog going REALLY well as u can see ![]()
So there you have it! I am not alone with my addiction thanks be to god, there are other people out there as bad as me in some cases worse in my opinion, but I would say that been an addict in denial, wouldn’t I.
Yay, Tuesday Twitter Question time is back, and with all the election malarky going on at the moment I decided not to ask anything election related, and instead talk about christmas, inspired by @pixievondust’s revelations last week of the really long list she placed on twitter of what she wanted for christmas, I thought I may aswell ask what gadgets everyone else desired.
macsuus from amsterdam was the first to reply very simply with “TomTom, the sat nav to stop her driving backwards down streets!”
mitzs said “A clothes dryer! I don’t even care if it is used….”
stretchneil was the next to reply with what I expected more of “If apple would bring out docking stations i’d be happy. Iphone in the meantime!”
shadowcall was next with “Amazon Kindle, click here to see”
grannymar “A toyboy! ;)”
PixieVonDust was thrilled with this question, suppose only right since she inspired it “Yay! gadgets! I believe I have already listed out a gazillion things I wanted! Im also likeing the Fujifilm Finepix Z20 I tested a while back (and not because its hot pink), http://url.ie/v2x this Philips TV is also loverly. I’ll be quiet now, realistically tho I will probably invest in a good monitor for my xbox 360.”
davymac “For Christmas… an iPhone with a battery that lasts a week under extremely heavy use! Oh alright 2 days then… so my ideal Christmas present would be a Morphie iPhone case/battery”
daraghlally “Prob the Macbook Air, or a HD projection TV”
sineadkeogh “A backscratcher… hmm, in actuality, probably an e-reader”
elfinamsterdam “Hmmm, i *think* i’d like an iPhone (have no use for one tho) but I’d most like a 1tb TimeCapsule and/or Airport Extreme, wish i had known about the airport extreme when i was buying my wifi router, as then I could have had wifi network @home!”
lecraic “No more gadgets for me this year, I have too many as it is, although a jetpack would be nice”
petsaretalking “Roll-around ice cream ball: click here to see more”
moonstruckmania “A working sound card, so I can watch tv online”
damienmulley “I’m thinking hard here and I don’t know. I would like all my music on one iPod so maybe the iPod classic. Now thats my baby …”
chrismehigan “The apple keyboard. I need a new keyboard =)”
marramgrass “New Mac Book Pro :-)”
bigstevie1275 “I would love a macbook as my next gadget only because I have most things and as well as that I have seen the light and mac is the way to go, I do have a laptop already so I’ll just wait till I need an upgrade. Oh sorry for answering early LOL”
jkeyes “a gadget that’s a real possibility, or any gadget on the planet? I’ll aim low and say an Eye-Fi card.”
WillKnott “Most desired! I Still want the 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime. I’ll make do with an enjoyable job”
Debz “I want to get Clocky “For himself, but I fear it would be chasing the damn thing around every morning! :P”
simonmcc “50mm lens for my 400D”
darraghdoyle “I’d love one of the write to text pens. Filofax do them. Just write normally then upload to software that converts to type.”
pokey_jo “I want one of those robots that vacuums your floor for you.”
goodonskis came in very late “too late for me? Some sort of iphone/Nike plus, with a built in headtorch, it’s too dark here to jog in the evenings now..:-)”
So there you have it, a small idea of what the folk of twitter want for christmas, and thanks to all of them for taking part! As for me I would love a laptop, a canon 40d, and possibly an A3 printer! not greedy at all am I!
